Beware of AIDS!

Some unwarranted moments in life may put your life in great troubles unknowingly. Well, I am talking about Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome that is AIDS. Everywhere we hear about this syndrome as one of the dreaded disease that has affected mankind. However, the most important aspect of this disease is that it is the most preventable disease.

AIDS in itself is not so bad a disease to handle. What makes it so dangerous is that it welcomes a lot of other diseases in the system, mainly because it destroys the normal power of immunity of the normal being. AIDS patients mainly suffer from pulmonary infections, gastrointestinal infections Neurological diseases and along with malignancies and tumours. AIDS has specific symptoms that you can easily identify because an average person with a good immune system is unlikely to show such symptoms.

A person affected with AIDS acquires diseases caused by all sorts of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites. The risk of succumbing to various forms of cancers such as cervical cancer and Kaposi’s sarcoma is also considerably high for AIDS patients. However, the common symptoms include heavy sweating during night, feverish tendencies, chills, swelling of glands, loss of weight and weakness.

If you are aware of this disease completely, you can prevent yourself and your family from acquiring this disease. That’s why educating people about the causes and results of the disease are the most important criteria of creating awareness regarding AIDS. Though people know that unprotected sex is the cause of this syndrome in the first place, many of them lack ideas of avoiding unprotected sex and utilizing the minimal measures like condom to prevent the spread of dreaded virus. Similarly, people who lack awareness regarding use of throw away syringes and needles may contact this virus unknowingly. Some people, while taking intravenous drugs, end up contracting AIDS because of the common syringes used during the process of drug intake.

People should also know that they should donate or accept blood only from known blood banks to avoid any kind of troubles later. The expectant mothers should check themselves for the virus so that their off springs can be prevented from acquiring the disease later.

Another important point to be kept in mind is that AIDS does not spread with casual contact. So, patients of HIV should be treated with care- there is no reason why you should abstain from talking to or sharing a meal with such a patient. Two other popular misconceptions are that AIDS is cured if the patient can have sexual intercourse with a virgin and that AIDS affects only homosexual men and women. These are not only false but can devastate other lives if believed in seriously.

Prevention is better than cure is an apt saying particularly apt for AIDS, at least until we find definitive treatment against the spread of virus. Till then, take care! Do not succumb to false promises made by quacks and get yourself investigated for the virus to avoid future hassles. Your one step in time will save many in future!
